Tasting Notes

Yountville lies in the center of Napa Valley, and while relatively young as an AVA, grapes were first planted here in 1836. Mild temperatures, gravelly silt loam and rocky alluvial soils allow fruit to linger on the vine, developing complex flavor with well-integrated tannins that allow for aging. Maritime breezes reach the Yountville Months, leading to diurnal temperature swings of 40 degrees. This limited release reserve wine is a fine example of Sterling quality.

Made from grower vineyards and produced in our reserve winery, our 2017 Yountville Cabernet Sauvignon is a small-lot tribute to Yountville’s unique niche within Napa Valley. The slightly cooler conditions of this region produce a wine with big tannins and rich color. Barrel aging in 100% French oak (95% new) helped develop a baking spice base with rich vanilla notes. On the nose, cedar, violet, and forest floor are accentuated by dark mountain fruit flavors such as bramble berry and toasted oak. Generous and bold, this wine will age for many years within the cellar.

“This wine would normally have been a single-vineyard designate from Sleeping Lady vineyard, but this fruit from there was still hanging during the fires in 2017. The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Yountville was aged for 18 months in French oak, 95% new. It sings of blackcurrant pastilles, blueberry preserves and Morello cherries with touches of pencil shavings, camphor, sandalwood and truffles. Full-bodied, firmly textured and chock-full of black fruit preserves and loads of spicy accents, it finishes long and refreshing. 460 cases were made.”

“Wild blackberry, tobacco, mahogany, walnut husk and oyster shell on the nose. It’s medium-to full-bodied with firm, fine-grained tannins. Beautifully layered and polished with an elegant, long finish.”

Vintage

Early season rains returned yields to normal levels, mitigating the extended drought afflicting most of California over the previous few years. A cool spring resulted in normal timing for bud break, in late March. Temperatures remained cool in May and June, but high temperatures in July and again in September triggered an early harvest. Quality was solid for the vintage overall, with little impact from fall wildfires since most fruit was already harvested and in barrel.

Vineyard

Our grapes came from the Yountville Bench, situated mid-way up the Napa Valley, just beneath the Mayacamas Mountains. The well-drained alluvial soils provide beneficial stress on the vines, encouraging concentrated flavors, color and aroma. As one of the more southern regions in the Valley for growing this varietal, Yountville has slightly cooler temperatures overall, lengthening the growing season and producing complex wines with big, robust tannins and dark, inky color.
