Tasting Notes

Clairmore Vineyard, named to honor its founder, is distinctive for the exceptional quality of fruit drive by a mélange of microclimate, soils, and vines first planted nearly two decades ago in one of Napa Valley's finest cabernet growing regions. In this vintage, Clones 8 and 337 from Block 10 are featured in a cabernet sauvignon with distinctive aromas and flavors of concentrated red and black fruits with floral notes of lavender leading to a lingering finish with medium tannins and welcome complexity and a round, plush mouthfeel.

Enveloped in a dark, inky hue, this distinguished Cabernet Sauvignon presents a deeply floral aroma with subtle hints of black currant and cola seamlessly interwoven. Upon the palate, it unleashes a burst of profound, black fruit flavors, accentuated by delicate notes of mint and bitter chocolate. Anticipate a bold, well-rounded mouthfeel accompanied by refined tannins that culminate in a long, lingering finish. An exceptional addition to your cellar, this wine is enjoyable now and promises to evolve in flavor and complexity over time.

Winemaking

After careful vineyard selection, the grapes were harvested in the early hours of the morning and brought straight to the winery. After being optically sorted in the state-of-the-art Sterling Reserve Winery, the fruit was split between stainless steel tanks and concrete tanks for added complexity and fermentation precision. After 2-3 weeks on skins and gentle pressing, the wines aged in 90% French oak barrels and 10% Hungarian oak barrels, at 80% new oak. After 18 months of aging, the best barrels from each lot were selected for brilliant fruit, fine tannins, and the best expression of Clairmore Vineyard.

Vintage

After a damp late winter and spring, the 2019 California vintage started one to two weeks later than normal, followed by cool temperatures that allowed the grapes to mature gradually. Owing to the extended, cool growing season, wine grapes ripened slowly with full flavors and superb balance.

Vineyard

Named after the owner who planted the vines in this exceptional location two decades  ago, Clairmore Vineyard is the newest addition to Sterling’s single-vineyard collection. Located high on the eastern mountain range of Napa Valley on the slopes of the Lake Hennessey basin amidst wild and rugged terrain of shale and red clay soils. In this vintage, clones 8 & 337 from Block 10 were selected contributing deep color, high-toned fruit and refined tannins.
