Tasting Notes

Sterling Vineyards’ Napa Valley wines show the depth, strength, and expressive quality of California’s most famous wine region. Fruit for our wines is grown throughout the region, from cool southern Carneros vineyards beside San Pablo Bay to the rugged northernmost benchlands and reaches near our Calistoga homeplace. Our team builds on a more than five- decade history of crafting beautiful Napa Valley wines by selecting the finest vineyard lots and creating memorable expressions, vintage after vintage.

Deeply saturated in color, Sterling Vineyards’ 2023 Napa Valley Petite Sirah presents an intense, inky purple hue in the glass. Its rich aromas of blackberry, violet, maraschino cherry, and slate are seasoned with a dash of white pepper, evoking the bouquet of a wildflower thicket on a hillside. Dark fruit pervades the mouth, with juicy flavors of black currant, blackberry, and plum enriched by a balsamic character. Silky and well-structured, this fruit-driven wine finishes with a lingering taste of black peppercorn and Amarena cherry. Pair this luscious Petite Sirah with hearty meals such as braised lamb, brisket, or roasted portobello mushrooms.

Winemaking

The Petite Sirah grapes were hand-harvested in the cool of the early morning. At the winery, fruit was destemmed before fermentation in 100% stainless steel. Two weeks of skin contact imparted deep, beautiful color concentration and fruit character, as well as supple tannins. The wine was aged for 16 months in French and American oak barrels (50% new), which imparted oak spice characteristics and a subtle vanilla essence.

Vintage

One of the longest growing seasons in over a decade, 2023 offered consistently mild weather throughout, presenting above-average crop yields and extended hang-time. Ample winter and spring rains set the stage for a reinvigorated vineyard, granting us healthy, saturated soils and full reservoirs. Bud break arrived nearly a month after what is typically expected, which led to a delayed set and protracted flowering, all of which, ultimately, contributed to a delayed harvest. A mild summer allowed the grapes to mature slowly and evenly, retain their natural acidity, and deliver truly balanced wines.

Vineyard

Most of the fruit for the 2023 vintage comes from Godward Vineyard in Calistoga, at the very northern tip of Napa Valley. This area experiences strong diurnal temperature swings, with very hot days and nights cooled by Russian River Valley fog that funnels through the Chalk Hill gap. Godward Vineyard’s fruit brings ripe tannins and intense color to the blend. Almost a third of grapes were sourced from Big Ranch Vineyard in the Oak Knoll district at the southern end of Napa Valley. With its heavy clay soils and the cooling influence of the San Pablo Bay and nearby Napa River, Big Ranch fruit retains its freshness and acidity, which intensifies and broadens this wine’s profile, adding hints of floral, spice, and fruit-forward characteristics. Petite Sirah is a varietal that is enhanced by the deliberate diversity of vineyard sources.
