Tasting Notes

Sterling Vineyards’ Napa Valley wines show the depth, strength, and expressive quality of California’s most famous wine region. Fruit for our wines is grown throughout the region, from cool southern Carneros vineyards beside San Pablo Bay to the rugged northernmost benchlands and reaches near our Calistoga homeplace. Our team builds on a more than five-decade history of crafting beautiful Napa Valley wines by selecting the finest vineyard lots and creating memorable expressions, vintage after vintage.

Sterling Vineyards’ 2023 Yates Family Cabernet Sauvignon captures the rugged, dark, and earthy character of Mt. Veeder fruit in this complex, nuanced wine that’s still wild at heart. Accented by tarragon and lavender top notes, the nose delves deep into a thicket of blackberry, boysenberry and acai berry scent. Lavender strews the palate as well, where acidity gives a fresh, tangy lift to dark fruit and milk chocolate flavor, balanced by smooth firm tannins that lend texture and depth to a toasty, walnut toffee taste. Botanical and berry notes echo through the lingering finish. Age this Cabernet for up to 10 – 15 years and open it for an engagement party to enjoy with filet mignon and black truffle or a grilled portobello steak.

Winemaking

Fruit from Yates Family Vineyard was hand-harvested and allowed to ferment in stainless vessels for up to 15 days, with regular pump-overs to extract deep color and rich flavors. The wine was then gently pressed, racked and aged in individual lots for 18 months in French oak barrels (89% new). Promising vineyard blocks were tasted frequently to discern which best expressed the unique character of Yates Family Vineyard before the final selection of candidate lots and individual barrels were marked for bottling.

Vintage

One of the longest growing seasons in over a decade, 2023 offered consistently mild weather throughout, presenting above-average crop yields and extended hang-time. Ample winter and spring rains set the stage for a reinvigorated vineyard, granting us healthy, saturated soils and full reservoirs. Bud break arrived nearly a month after what is typically expected, which led to a delayed set and protracted flowering, all of which, ultimately, contributed to a delayed harvest. A mild summer allowed the grapes to mature slowly and evenly, retain their natural acidity, and deliver truly balanced wines.

Vineyard

Just above the town of Napa, Yates Family Vineyard is planted at an elevation of 1,100 feet on the southeast-facing slopes of Mt. Veeder. Vineyards here were first planted in the 1860s. The steep, rugged terrain comprises rocky volcanic and sedimentary soils, which naturally limit yields and produce small berries with concentrated flavor. Because of its altitude and proximity to San Pablo Bay, the climate is generally cooler than the valley floor, with more wind, less fog settling, and a longer, slower ripening season. The Mt. Veeder AVA is known for structured, age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignon that shows dark mountain fruit, firm tannins, and savory herbal and earthy notes.
