Tasting Notes

Black cherry and rich toffee aromas open the nose, followed by brambly berry flavors. The sweet scent of forest floor and rich cherry cobbler weave through the smooth and supple palate. The finish is long and satisfying, with a spicy fruit intensity that extends toward a rewarding finale. Roasted duck and other game meats will pair well with the inviting personality of this Pinot Noir.

Known to produce exceptional Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, the Los Carneros American Viticultural Area straddles Napa and Sonoma Valleys and is the coolest region in these valleys. It forms a long strip at the northern edge of the San Pablo Bay, where persistent winds and fog blow in off the water, maintaining low overall temperatures. This allows the grapes to ripen slowly, developing complexity and retaining a vibrant acidity. The thin, shallow soils are clay and loam with poor drainage and low fertility. In this environment, the vines struggle, thus developing low yields of intensely flavored fruit with good acidity and complexity.

Warm and dry, 2012 delivered a welcome reprieve from the prior two vintages. Amenable weather conditions produced large clusters and large berries that took a bit longer to develop; but with a little extra hang time, we were able to achieve intense flavors and rich complexity. We saw good quality from our Pinot Noir grapes in Napa Valley.
