Sterling Vineyards is proud to be the only winery in the world with an aerial gondola. Since the 1970s, this iconic lift has carried guests up the hillside to our winery in Calistoga, offering sweeping views of Napa Valley along the way.
At its peak, the original tram transported nearly 300,000 guests annually. As tram assistant manager Brian Bortolussi shared, “We’re the first and last thing people see when they visit Sterling Vineyards, and we do our best to make sure they’re happy on both sides.”
The gondola has always been more than transportation. It is part of the Sterling experience.
Rebuilding After the Glass Fire

In 2020, the Northern California Glass Fire moved through the property, causing significant damage and ultimately requiring replacement of the original tram system and its support structures.
While saying goodbye to the historic tram was bittersweet, the decision created an opportunity for thoughtful innovation.
Rebuilding lead Paul Schlieder noted, “Now is an opportunity to move to a new modern machine. I think the end result will be something spectacular.”
The new aerial gondola represents both resilience and renewal for Sterling Vineyards.
