Pre-Party: How to Chill Your Wine
Shine Brighter Together with our tips on ways to chill your wine.

As the sun begins to set on summer, there's no better send-off than an outdoor bash. From backyard BBQs and sunset chuckles to those irresistible chill vibes, these are the moments that craft our summer memories. But before the party playlists dominate and grill marks become the talk of the hour, let’s put a spotlight on wine. Achieving the perfect chill is paramount for those delightful summer sips. Whether you're a wine aficionado or just love a good time, here's how to nail the ideal chill for your end-of-summer celebrations.
Refrigerator
- Time: 2-3 hours for white wine, 30 minutes for red wine
- Method: Place the wine bottle on its side in the coldest part of your fridge. This is typically the back, as it's farthest from the door.
Freezer
- Time: 15-30 minutes
- Method: If you're in a rush, put the wine bottle in the freezer. But set a timer! You don't want it to freeze, which can push out the cork and alter the wine's structure.
Ice and Water Bath
- Time: 15-20 minutes
- Method: Fill a bucket or large bowl with equal parts ice and cold water. Submerge the wine bottle up to its neck. This method is quicker than just using ice alone because the water covers more of the wine's surface area.
Salt, Ice, and Water Bath
- Time: 10-15 minutes
- Method: For an even faster chill, add salt to the ice and water bath. Salt lowers the freezing point of water and allows it to get colder without turning into ice, chilling your wine more quickly.
Wine Chiller or Chilling Rod
- Time: Varies
- Method: These are specialty items you can buy that either surround the wine bottle or insert into it to quickly chill the wine. They're particularly useful if you want to keep wine chilled at the table or if you're opening multiple bottles during the party.
Wet Cloth
- Time: 10-20 minutes
- Method: Wrap the wine bottle in a damp cloth (a tea towel or paper towels work), then place it in the freezer. The dampness enhances the cooling effect on the wine bottle.
Thermal Bags
- Time: Varies depending on the product
- Method: There are thermal bags available that can chill wine bottles. They're filled with a gel that becomes cold when the bag is stored in the freezer. When you're ready to use it, take the bag out, insert the wine bottle, and it will chill rapidly.

General Tips
Check the Desired Temperature
Different wines are best served at different temperatures. For example, fuller-bodied white wines like Chardonnay are typically served slightly warmer than light, crisp wines like Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio.
Avoid Extreme Temperatures
Never allow the wine to freeze. If a wine bottle does accidentally freeze, let it thaw in the fridge and consume it in the near future. Its taste and structure might be affected.
Remember, these are general guidelines, and the best temperature for any wine is the one that tastes best to you. If you have the opportunity, experiment a little to find the optimal serving temperature for your personal preference.
