Winter at Sterling is a season of precision and artistry. From topping barrels to blending under Winemaker Lauren Kopit’s guidance, here’s how we prepare the 2025 reds and 2024 whites for release, plus what made the 2025 growing season so distinctive.
Reflecting on the 2025 Vintage

The 2025 growing season brought balance and complexity to Napa Valley. Early spring rains replenished reservoirs after several dry years, while mild summer temperatures supported slow, even ripening. Harvest began with crisp whites and Pinot Noir, followed by Cabernet Sauvignon from Diamond Mountain and Mt. Veeder. These conditions produced wines with vibrant aromatics, layered fruit, and elegant structure, hallmarks of Sterling’s Napa Valley style.
Winter at the Winery

Our cellar work during winter ensures every bottle meets the Sterling Standard.
Topping Up
Every six weeks, barrels are “topped off” to replace wine lost through evaporation, known as the “angel’s share.” This prevents oxidation while allowing subtle air exchange that enhances complexity.
Racking and Returning
To clarify wines and remove sediment, we transfer wine from barrels to tanks, clean the barrels, and return the wine. This process preserves purity and prevents reductive qualities.
Blending
Winter is blending season. Winemaker Lauren Kopit and her team taste through the 2024 whites and 2025 reds, crafting harmonious blends that balance aroma, flavor, and texture. Lauren calls this “getting to know the wines again” after months of aging in oak.
Looking Ahead
Expect new releases later this year that showcase Sterling’s commitment to quality and innovation. From vibrant whites to structured reds, these wines reflect Napa’s unique terroir and Sterling’s 60-year legacy.
