Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

A classic Napa Cabernet, the deep ruby color is a visual expression of the intense black fruit flavors present on the nose, dark blackberry and plum followed by vanilla barrel notes. Rich black currant and ripe plum coat the palate and are accompanied by warm caramel and vanilla. Medium to full-bodied, this is a beautifully balanced wine with smooth, plush tannins, and a vibrant finish that begs you to take another sip. Enjoy upon release or can age gracefully if cellared properly for many years to come.

“Aromas of bark, cassis, bay leaf and ground spice. Full-bodied with fine, tight tannins. Bright acidity helps to articulate the ripe red and black fruit. Nice transparency. Best after 2025.” - James Suckling, June 1, 2022

Winemaking

Winemaking

The fruit was hand-harvested before final sorting in an optical sorter, selecting only the highest quality fruit for fermentation in concrete vessels. The concrete tanks offer a significant purity of expression and refinement of tannins. The fruit was allowed to ferment for up to 15 days with regular pump-overs to extract deep color and rich flavors. The wine was then gently pressed, racked, and aged for 18 months in 100% new French oak. After aging, barrels were individually tasted and those that best expressed the unique sense of place were selected and bottled.

Vintage

Vintage

After a damp late winter and spring, the 2019 California vintage started one to two weeks later than normal, followed by cool temperatures that allowed the grapes to mature gradually. Owing to the extended, cool growing season, wine grapes ripened slowly with full flavors and superb balance.

Vineyard

The Yates Family vineyard is found moderately high, just above the town of Napa, planted at an elevation of 1,100 feet. Mt. Veeder is one of Napa's most unique AVAs, known for an extended growing season and volcanic soils with a variety of microclimates. The vineyard is found at the end of Redwood Road, near the Archer Taylor Preserve managed by the Land Trust of Napa Valley. Vineyards were first planted here in the 1860s.
