Tasting Notes

The 2021 Pinot Noir strikes a fine balance between its fruit-forward nature and its earthy, herbal components. It embodies the warmth of the vintage, showcasing riper fruit flavors while maintaining the elegance and finesse characteristic of Pinot Noir. With its red plum, cherry, and dried strawberry notes, it delivers a dynamic and multifaceted taste experience. The addition of black tea and earthy herbal nuances adds a layer of intrigue, resulting in a wine that is both intriguing and satisfying.

Winemaking

The Pinot Noir grapes were handled very gently from vineyard to winery.  The hand-picked fruit was destemmed, then fermented slightly cooler in stainless fermenters to enhance depth in the wine. After 14 days on skins, free run juice was drained and sent directly to the barrel for malolactic fermentation. The wine was aged in a mix of French, 60%, Hungarian, 30%, and American 10% oak barrels for 8 months before it was bottled and allowed additional time to age to gain complexity before release.

Vintage

The 2021 growing season began early with abundant sunshine, leading to exceptionally high-quality fruit. Early rain followed by a lack of notable precipitation throughout the season created an ideal environment for our vineyards. Budbreak occurred in April, with flowering and blooming in May. Although the summer temperatures returned to normal, resulting in an early harvest, the lower yields due to drought conditions produced intensely flavored fruit with smaller berries. Harvest took place under clear skies from September to October, with some early rain. The grapes ripened optimally, allowing our winemakers to craft wines with fantastic character. These wines exhibit vibrant colors, intense aromas, perfect balance, and a lush profile highlight the fruit.

Vineyard

Fruit for this reserve wine was sourced from the Hallberg Ranch in Sebastopol. The soils are classic Goldridge sandy-loam, which is common to the area, and the region is heavily impacted by marine influences from the Pacific, a scant 20 miles west.  Sunny warm days are tempered by cooling fog, creating the perfect growing environment for Pinot Noir.
