Tasting Notes

Tasting Note

Deep, rich notes of blackberry, blueberry and black raspberry jam exude from the glass along with vanilla, warm baking spices, cocoa and sweet tobacco. Blackberry and blueberry continue on the palate, entwined with vanilla and spicier notes of black peppercorn, anise and sage. Savory bacon flavors add depth. Bold, yet velvety, tannins help draw out the spice in the lengthy finish. Pair with braised short ribs, roasted duck, or even a well-dressed hamburger.

Winemaking

Harry Hansen - Winemaker

Director of Winemaking Harry Hansen was raised in nearby Sonoma County. “One of my earliest memories of wine was the gallon jug of red wine that we always had at home. I would go with my father to a local winery, maybe in Kenwood or Healdsburg, to refill that jug and chit-chat with the winery proprietors. The aromas of those wines were always something attractive, somehow mysterious, but always memorable.”
Harry joined Sterling Vineyards and relocated to Napa Valley just before the 2011 Harvest. “The opportunity to join such a respected Napa Valley winery is exciting and a fantastic next step in my winemaking career. Sterling Vineyards is making some wonderful wines, and I look forward to taking that next step up in quality and reputation.”

After several years of plentiful harvests, the 2015 vintage brought low yields, but outstanding quality in the fruit that was available. A mild spring with a rain-free summer allowed fruit to ripen at a steady and deliberate pace. Harvest began a few days earlier than 2014. Drier than normal and absent hoped for conditions, combined with abundant sunshine and high degree days contributed to smaller berry sizes and lower yields, resulting in fruit with excellent concentration, color and complex flavors.
