Tasting Notes

Notably deep in color, the 2019 Diamond Mountain Cabernet has aromas and flavors of intense black fruit led by black currant, blackberry, and dark plum alongside warm baking spice notes and caramelized sugar. With layers of complexity, the palate is decadent and rich, revealing flavors of blackberry, bramble, and hints of sage. Savory with layers and lift, the fruit is supported by the well-integrated oak notes creating structure and depth.  Plush, mouth-filling, powerful yet reigned in tannins, finishing with a mouthwatering acidity with beautiful balance and complexity.  Crafted to be cellar worthy 10-15 years; however, if you’d like to enjoy it now, we recommend decanting to allow the fullest expression to evolve and reveal itself within the glass.

“Aromas of crushed stone, lead pencil, blackcurrant and plum. Full-bodied with tight tannins. Dry, with juicy black fruit. Lovely tension. Great concentration, with depth and intensity. This will age wonderfully. Best after 2026.” - James Suckling, June 1, 2022

Winemaking

Hand-harvested in mid-October and optically sorted, selecting only the highest quality fruit for fermentation in a combination of concrete and stainless vessels. The fruit was allowed to ferment for up to 15 days with regular pump-overs to extract deep color and rich flavors. The wine was then gently pressed, racked, and aged for 18 months in 97% French oak and 3% American oak, 83% new. After aging, barrels were individually tasted and those that best expressed the unique sense of place were selected and bottled.

Vineyard

This vintage is sourced from Diamond Mountain Ranch and Petersen Ranch, both in the Mayacamas Mountain range west of Napa Valley near the winery home in Calistoga. Steep volcanic hillsides notably produce deeply concentrated fruit in small bunches, with even smaller berries. Vineyard contours are relatively steep, as Diamond Mountain slopes from 800 to 1,700 feet above sea level. The vineyards are often above the fog line, receiving ample sunshine at cooler temperatures than the valley floor.
