Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

The Platinum is the ultimate expression of Sterling winemaking. Handcrafted from exceptional fruit and carefully nurtured, this rich full-bodied wine offers dark fruit aromas, such as blackberry and cherry, balanced by notes of German chocolate and oak spice. On the palate, juicy blackberry and black currant perfectly blend with dark chocolate and chai spices, leading to a long, smooth finish. Bold yet balanced fruit, polished tannins, and well-structured.

“This wine’s floral perfume is as subtle as the black cherry and plum fruit is gentle. While the oak is present—the wine aged in a mix of French, Hungarian and American oak barrels—it doesn’t add any excess weight, giving a satin texture to the lacy fruit. Blended by Harry Hansen, this cabernet doesn’t overwhelm with its extract, even as it keeps giving flavor.” - Joshua Greene

Lauren Kopit - Winemaker

Lauren Kopit has worked in the wine industry since graduating from UC Davis with a Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology in 2009. She began her career in winemaking via harvest laboratory positions at Franciscan Winery and Matchbook Winery, before returning to UC Davis to earn her Master of Science degree in Viticulture and Enology. After graduating in 2013, Lauren experienced two additional harvests as a vintage cellar hand, working at the small, ultra-premium Odette Estate Winery, followed by New Zealand’s Church Road Winery, before joining the Sterling Vineyards team in 2014."I was at Sterling one week and I knew I wanted to work here forever," remembers Lauren. "The priority on quality and the passion from the whole team is incredibly inspiring."

Vintage

Vintage

After a damp late winter and spring, the 2019 California vintage started one to two weeks later than normal, followed by cool temperatures that allowed the grapes to mature gradually. Owing to the extended, cool growing season, wine grapes ripened slowly with full flavors and superb balance.

Vineyard

Vineyards

Cabernet Sauvignon is the signature variety of the Napa Valley and the appellation excels in producing outstanding examples of this admired varietal. Napa Valley offers an ideal combination of topography, geology, and climate, that enables Cabernet Sauvignon to reach optimum ripeness, balance, and finesse. And within the valley, some exceptional vineyards and sub-appellations produce some of the finest expressions of this noble grape, truly Platinum worthy. For the 2019 vintage, our winemakers selected notable lots from vineyards spanning key Napa Valley growing regions, including the Meigs Vineyard in Wooden Valley, Clairmore Vineyard in Napa Valley, and Yates Family Vineyard in Mt. Veeder. A small amount of Petit Verdot was selected from St. Helena to complete this blend.
